ARINC 664 Part 7 AFDX: Deterministic Avionics Switched Ethernet

Replacing point-to-point aircraft wiring with guaranteed bandwidth and mathematical latency bounds.

Virtual Links and Bandwidth Allocation Gaps

AFDX organizes traffic into Virtual Links (VLs), each assigned a dedicated bandwidth allocation gap (BAG) between 1ms and 128ms. Network calculus proves mathematically that worst-case end-to-end delays remain within microsecond thresholds.

Redundancy Management and Frame Elimination

Every packet is transmitted simultaneously across independent Network A and Network B cables. The receiver end-system processes whichever arrives first and silently discards the duplicate, guaranteeing zero interruption upon cable severed.
